A Pain in the A... Back
I take my back for granted way too often. Are you aware of how intricately designed it is? God did such a cool job programming our bodies to function specific ways for specific purposes. The spinal cord and countless nerves run through the spinal column. It makes sense that when we have a headache or other ailment in the body it can often be caused by a subluxation in the back. You impressed by the "fancy" talk? Don't be. I have unfortunately learned it from all my recent visits to the chiropractor.
I have been going regularly since about December. My back issues started with my feet when my shoes, with custom made orthotics, were stolen (inside my gym bag along with some other important items...). I was without orthotics from late October until early January. In that time my whole gait and alignment were thrown off.
Most recently the pain has been from a "pinched" nerve in my lower back. It pinches and then causes the muscles around it to spasm. At that point my right hip protrudes out to the right and I am crooked. I am telling you that when the shift occurs that causes the "pinch," it takes my breath away and not in a good way. Last Thursday I woke up, got up and stretched. I stretched the wrong way. I felt it happen and called the chiropractor immediately. I could barely walk and somehow made it driving. I shuffled in and tried to get on my back on the table. Face down, he tried to stretch out and relax the tight muscles and gently tried to manipulate something back into place. No go. He requested that I go home, ice the area and come back later in the day. Later in the day I was able to relax a little better for a little bit of adjustment.
It has now been a week and one day. I could actually stand up straight today with lots of muscle tenderness. I have been so discouraged and unproductive because of this. The most I could do was stand for about 10 minutes at a time, sit down, lay back in the recliner, get up, walk around and then repeat cycle.
I still hurt and the muscles through my hips are extremely achy and sore from being drawn and guarded.
Through this I have been telling God, "thank you it is not worse". "Help me not take my mobility for granted anymore"!
